To Text Messaging
Dear Text Messaging,
I just wanted to write a short note to express how glad I am you exist.
Without you, I would not be able to be as passive aggressive and non-confrontational as I like to be. I love the fact that I can say things via you that I would NEVER say to someone’s face (let alone over the phone) like, “You’re a horrible b*tch. Please go die now.” Like I would ever have the balls to say that in real life! You are awesome for this reason.
You’re also a good friend when I just want to tell someone something real quick without going through the whole phone call rigmarole. This is especially nice when I want to tell a loquacious relative I am running late without having to listen to their endless chatter any earlier than necessary.
Another area in life you make special is dating. You add an entirely new element to seeing someone. Whenever I don’t want to seem forward and/or desperate, I just send a text. It’s the perfect way to say “I care” without really caring.
Another good thing about you, Texting, is that you have given students and office hostages everywhere a means of communicating whilst bored out of our minds. Class is no longer physically agonizing, and desk-jockeying can become exciting while waiting for a text!
The only time I really get annoyed by you is when people abuse you. I don’t like when people try and plan get-togethers via text. It just becomes drawn out and confusing. Things like that can be discussed in ten seconds on the phone. I wish people knew when and how to use you.
You’re wonderful, Texting. If you didn’t exist, I might have to change my whole personality.
